VIKRAMORVASHIYAM (The Eternal Love): 2006 Duration 50 minutes
The romance of Pururavas and Urvashi,
which Kalidasa dramatized in Vikramorvashiyam, is one of the most popular stories in Indian literature. First recorded in the Rig-Veda, the oldest literary composition of Indo-European civilization, it has fascinated the Indian mind for thousands of years.
Kalidasa’s Vikramorvashiyam speaks about the eternal love between King Pururavas and the heavenly damsel, Urvashi. The choreography, a dance-drama adapted from Kalidasa’s play, examines their initial union, follows their dramatic separation and recounts the couple’s tribulations.
The climax of the piece is their exciting reunion that holds the audience breathless.
